‘SUMMER CAMP’ - wild mill studios

For ten days surrounding the summer solstice in June 2019, wander upstream in the valley of the watershed.

Study the mossy mysteries of a lichen laden limestone labyrinth, bathe in pine forest breezes, drink from springs and swim in waterfalls, eat from the farm stand and meditate in the garden: give nourishment and focus to your art or writing practice.

Artists creating bodily relational work in conversation with site specific wilderness and a return to familiar processes are encouraged to apply.

Feel like a kid at summer camp and a bohemian at a friend’s country house all at once in this self-directed yet collaborative and restorative studio-art retreat in the rural Niagara Escarpment river-valley wilds north of Toronto.

Relaxed days in our renovated century mill in a quiet picturesque village surrounded by conservation lands of ponds, springs, gardens, farms, and world class hiking trails offer ambitious artists a break from their usual pace and a grounded, natural daily rhythm for focusing on a creative recharge or delving into a project in a large, historic, sunlit space.

Independent work is supported by group connection, curated resources, and thematic conversation over farm to table home cooked dinners, walks in the woods, or a float in the canoe.

We invite artists from near and far to form an intimate group of five, for ten wild days in Midsummer.

This Residency Provides:

  • large, sunlit, shared studio space

  • comfortably appointed shared or private bedrooms

  • inspiring indoor and outdoor living space

  • extensive art library and record collection

  • creative support for your project or focus

  • focused group conversations about our practices and processes

  • guided hikes, some transportation to local towns and farms (ask about further assistance, art supplies or airport transfer)

  • catered dinners: a feast of the local fields each evening

  • snacks, drinks, tea and coffee

  • daily thematic group conversations

Accommodation Fees for 10 Days of Summer Camp:

  • Shared Triple Twin: $600 CAD

Garden-level apartment in our historic mill between the stream and pond. Two rooms of limestone walls and exposed beam ceilings with vintage kitchenette, gas fireplace, three piece bath with claw foot tub, and two private entrances to the water and gardens.

  • Open Studio Loft: $750 CAD

Private double bed in the open main floor loft above the studio with shared bathrooms and private entrance. Must be cool with ladders- the birds eye pond view from bed is worth the climb.

  • Private Writer’s Room: $900 CAD

Double bed, art library, writing desk, reading and meditation nook, and adjacent shared four piece bathroom provides a little luxury and privacy from shared workspaces for artists who would like a room of one’s own.

‘FUTURE ANCESTORS’ - CORAL CABIN

Where is the past in your future? How does ancestry manifest in you? What are the clues or currents you choose to follow, and to what destination?

Artists seeking solitude can unplug from modern routines while exploring the mysteries and wild charms of northern ocean coves in this fabled circle of islands at the fourth corner of the earth.

Artists proposing work related to themes of ancestry, tradition, storytelling, folklore, fable, narrative, history, or psychogeography; and who wish to create a series or body of work in response to this rustic, rural, wild, northern island location are warmly invited to apply.

A rustic off-grid salt-box ocean-front cabin on New World Island, northern Newfoundland, is the home base and portal back to century old, time weathered traditions.

Independent artists are on their own to explore and create in this wild place, while drawing inspiration from nearby hiking trails, the village of Twilingate, and the Ferry from Farewell to the fabled Fogo Island and ‘fourth corner of the earth’.

We invite both solo artists and creative collaborators to develop a self-directed residency of one, two, three, or four weeks, in response to this thematic call.

This Residency Provides:

A private off-grid single story cabin overlooking a northern ocean inlet of New World Island, connected by causeway to Twilingate in 15 minutes, Gander Airport in 1 hour, or 30 minutes to Farewell for the ferry to Fogo Island.

For this type of adventure, our home base provides everything you want, and nothing you don’t:

  • Kitchen with basic cooking supplies, potable water sink, coolers, dishes, and dining table with service for 1-4

  • Outdoor cooktop camp stove

  • Outhouse, hand-wash station

  • Woodstove, firewood and kindling

  • 1 private ocean view bedroom with double bed, 1 private room with single bed. Two extra single beds can be added to the livingroom.

Accommodation Fee Schedules for Coral Cabin:

  • Solo artists, duo collaborators, or artists travelling with partners or children are invited to submit proposals for self-directed, self-catered residencies at weekly rates:

    1 week: $875 CAD

    2 weeks: $1450 CAD

    3 weeks: $1800 CAD

    1 month: $2200 CAD

*Artists are responsible for their own air, sea, and ground transportation, food, and art supplies.

*A personal vehicle or rental car is required.

‘GEOLOGY MYTHOLOGY’ - THEANO POINT

Calling travellers of the multiverse to research, develop, and create artworks that explore questions of quantum physics through the observation and abstraction of nature.

Discover the meeting places where the freshwater inland-sea and coastal climate of Lake Superior shapes this dramatic topographically and geologically diverse peninsula of pre-Cambrian granite, pitchblend, ochre and quartz called Theano Point.

Artists with interests in origin story mythologies, creative cartography, or site responsive architecture will be given special consideration.

Must be adventurous in spirit and experienced in the outdoors for this self-directed wilderness adventure.

Absorb the energies of these wild lands and the world renowned Lake Superior Provincial Park that surrounds it. Walk in the footsteps of the Group of Seven painters who once wandered here, follow the trail of your ancestry, or make your own path in a pristine alpine and freshwater coastal wilderness.

Total isolation and unplugging from technology is a requirement of this residency. Due to the remote location, no cell phone service or wifi is available onsite.

Artists are encouraged to invite partners or creative collaborators to join in their self-directed adventure.

This Residency Provides:

  • secluded mountainside campsite above a beautiful sand and pebble beach on Lake Superior

  • a refurbished off-grid 1969 Airstream studio-cabin trailer with one double bed, two single beds, all bed linens, woodstove, solar lighting, radio, and workstation

  • covered outdoor kitchen with propane stovetop, kitchen basics, and food service for four

  • outhouse and hand-wash station

  • two picnic tables, two coolers

  • two 17-foot sea canoes

  • solar panel and battery

  • hammock, picnic baskets

  • firewood

  • 300 acre expanse of private beaches, dramatic shoreline, and old-growth alpine wilderness

We are proud to provide this immersive experience, spectacular wilderness, unique accommodations and project support for artists at Theano Point for:

1 week: $875 CAD

2 weeks: $1250 CAD

3 weeks: $1600 CAD

*Artists are responsible for their own air and / or ground transportation, food, and art supplies.

*A personal vehicle or rental car is required.

* Due to the wild, remote location of Theano Point, participants will also be interviewed about their suitability to this experience as part of the application process.

Come to the edge and listen closely...
in an ancient lichen covered hush,
each swirling wave whispers an eternal dream
in each moment it meets the shore.
